About this Guide 

There’s a wealth of great social media advice online, but we thought it would be helpful to collect and synthesize it in this Guide to help those who are just getting started on your social media journey.

This document was compiled by Lori Halley (Engaging Apricot - Wild Apricot’s blog writer) and Jay Moonah (Noisy Apricot – VP, Marketing at Wild Apricot) using many online social media resources (listed at the end of the Guide), including past Wild Apricot blog posts (written by Rebecca Leaman).

Getting started with social media isn’t like learning to swim - you shouldn’t just jump or dive in! You need to start by dipping your toe in the social media waters to get acclimatized before you slowly wade in.

While there is no one-size-fits-all strategy for launching into social media, most experts suggest that organizations new to social media take it slow and…

  1. Start by listening (following and monitoring)
  2. Then create connections and partnerships by participating in online conversations
  3. Establish your social media goals & develop a realistic plan
  4. Begin to build a presence (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, blogs, etc.)
