When Volunteer Jobs Are Just Too Big

Are there volunteer roles that your organization just can’t fill? Or perhaps there is one volunteer job in particular that is causing “volunteer fatigue” because it is just so involved and requires an enormous time commitment. 

If this is the case, Tobi Johnson (Tobi Johnson & Associates) suggests rather than searching for a “super volunteer” or a “Mr. or Ms. Right” to take on these big jobs, you should re-design these roles. 

Re-designing Volunteer Jobs That Are “Too Big” 

In a new article in our Membership Knowledge Hub, Tobi Johnson offers ideas, tips and steps you can take to re-design volunteer roles so that “they feel more like a reasonable request.” In re-designing these big jobs, Johnson suggests, you are converting “what was thought of as a people problem into a process problem.”

One way Johnson suggests for ensuring effective buy-in for the re-design, is to get volunteers involved in the process. Along with offering three reasons to promote volunteer participation in the re-design, she offers 6 steps to take to assess and re-engineer volunteer tasks, including revised position descriptions.

In addition, Tobi outlines some helpful tips for preventing volunteer fatigue and burn out, including:

  • Reduce effort through technology and automation
  • Reduce mental demands by providing job aids and ready resources
  • Reduce the bureaucratic burden
