Sneak Peek at our Small Membership Insight Survey Results

In November we launched an online survey to gain BIG insight into small membership organizations. We’d like to thank all of those who participated – we had 559 respondents.

We’re still reviewing the findings and excited with the wealth of information we’ve gathered about small membership organizations. And while we’ll be offering highlights of the findings on this blog in January, we wanted to offer a “sneak peek” before the holidays. 

First – who responded to our survey?

Volunteers or Paid Staff/Contractor:

It was interesting to see that over 60% of the survey participants were volunteers: 

  • 63.7% are unpaid volunteers
  • 18.3% were part-time staff or contractors 
  • 17.9% were full-time, paid staff or contractors

Their role:

We asked respondents what their role is at their organization.  As you'll see from the diagram below, the top three categories were: President/Board Chair; Executive Director; and Website Manager.

What do we mean when we say “small”?

Number of Members:

When we asked the size of the respondent’s membership organization, close to 60% of respondents reported that their organizations had fewer than 500 members. Here’s a look at the findings:  
  • <50 members -10.6%
  • 50-99 members - 14.0%
  • 100-249 members - 33.1%
  • 250-499 members - 24.2%
  • 500-999 members - 9.6%
  • 1000-2000 members - 5.8%
  • 2000+ members - 2.7%

Organization’s Budget:

Over 75% of respondents reported that their organization’s annual budget was less than $100,000.  Here are the top three categories: 
  • $2,000 - $10,000 -  21.0%
  • $10,000 - $50,000 -  34.5%
  • $50,000 - $100,000 - 20.0%

Who manages the organization on a day-to-day basis?

One of the key questions we wondered about was: who is managing these small organizations, volunteers or staff? It was interesting to see that over 50% of respondents reported that their organization was solely volunteer-led.  Here's a look at the findings:
