Food For Thought At Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to our American friends.

This holiday is a time for gathering together with friends and family to celebrate and to take stock of everything we have to be thankful for. And for many of us, this will be the start of a season of eating, drinking and merriment!

In my Giving Thanks post marking our Canadian Thanksgiving holiday, I noted that it is also a time to recognize that while we celebrate our bountiful tables, there are so many individuals and families struggling to survive.

Using catering to beef-up non-profit programs

This message really hit home when I recently attended the launch of Toronto’s Daily Bread Food Bank’s Catering Kitchen. This is an initiative through which the participants in Daily Bread’s Food Services Training Program gain important employment skills in the preparation and serving of food through catering and at the same time, raise funds to continue funding the retraining program.  

And according to a Globe and Mail article, Charity Begins in the Kitchen, many non-profits are looking to catering to both raise funds and raise awareness. The article suggests that “for many non-profits that cater, a primary aim is to train people with barriers to employment – housing insecurity, mental issues, addiction recovery – in food services.”

Restaurants that care

I also saw an interesting article in Fast Company about a phone app that indicates the restaurants in New York City that support City Harvest  – a food rescue organization that collects excess food from restaurants, grocers, corporate cafeterias, manufacturers, and farms and delivers it free of charge to nearly 600 community food programs throughout New York City. As the article suggests, the app allows you to search by cuisine, location, or name of restaurant for City Harvest partners, “so you know wherever you go - at least as far as food waste is concerned - you're voting with your stomach for a more ethical meal.”

So that’s just a little food for thought as you sit down to your Thanksgiving dinner – enjoy!
