Microvolunteering is an opportunity for someone outside your organization to provide you with help by executing some small task from home, usually online. It doesn’t require as much commitment as traditional volunteering, and costs nothing. Participants can conduct these actions with just a little effort, usually from a smartphone or other electronic device.

For example, an organization might ask followers to place the url of their website in their email signature. Other opportunities can include sharing a post on social media, uploading a personal piece of digital media for a larger project, or simply reading web pages. This type of volunteering is perfect for people who want to help, but don’t have a lot of time or money to contribute to a worthy cause. 

Use Facebook to Showcase Microvolunteering Opportunities

Micro-volunteering is a great way to get people to engage on your Facebook page and help out your cause at the same time. Some visitors will naturally be interested in helping you reach your goals by investing their own time and energy to help. Others will like the fact that you highlight volunteer opportunities on Facebook because they can see, in real time, what difference your organization is making in the world.

In November, 2015, UNICEF promoted a microvolunteering opportunity to get fans involved in their #BeAThinker campaign. They posted a photo album of others around the world participating in the campaign, and prompted fans to do the same. 


By simply posting a photo of themselves with the accompanying hashtag along with their own thoughts on the matter, visitors to the Facebook album were invited to get involved. This provided a way for fans to contribute to raising awareness from the comfort of their own homes. 

Go Beyond Your Own Facebook Page

Sometimes social media isn’t enough for notable outreach. Fortunately, when you’re not making a profit from your work, the taboo of shameless self-promotion goes out the window. There are free directories set up specifically for micro-volunteering, run by philanthropists like yourself. If you come up with a good plan for posting an opportunity, you can promote traffic to your post via various Facebook groups, Skills for Change, and Help from Home. Check them out.

Go to the search bar within Facebook and look for Pay it Forward groups. There are a lot. Start local, and work your way out. In this way, there is no limit to how much outreach you can get.

Join the groups that you want to share with, make sure to check that your post is in alignment with the group rules, and share away. Comment and engage with those that help you or have nice things to say. 

Hint: If your not-for-profit organization is dedicated to animals, join some animal lover groups to share in as well. Facebook groups, once you get the hang of them, are one of the best ways to promote micro-volunteering opportunities because they’re very personal.

Help From Home is mostly made up of simpler tasks for ordinary people. They ask that microvolunteering tasks meet the following criteria: 

  • Takes less than 30 minutes to complete.
  • Can be completed from home.
  • Doesn’t involve specialized skills for participation.
  • Has a web page that clearly spells out what’s involved in the microvolunteer task.
  • Has longevity, ie. will be available for no less than 6 months.
  • Does not involve ‘liking’, ‘following’, or sharing social media posts.


By taking advantage of microvolunteering opportunities on Facebook, you can start to get some solid engagement on your promotions. So, when planning your next outreach campaign, be sure to integrate these ideas into your strategy. You will see a notable improvement in the type and flow of traffic to your posts and the web pages they’re promoting.
