January Update: Getting Started with 2016

WildApricot Updates January 29, 2016

Can you believe that January is over already?

If you’ve been following us on Facebook, you would have noticed that we hired two more support staff to help handle calls and emails (we made them cook us breakfast on their first day). We’ve also expanded our development team to work on more features and updates faster. Plus, we’re increasing our marketing team, not only to help us grow, but also to help with product education, and to ramp up our highly requested webinars and e-courses.

We want 2016 to be our biggest year yet, and I’m happy to say we’re well on our way to making this happen.

Software Update 5.7.2

This month we brought you a minor update to the WildApricot Software, but we took the opportunity to sneak in some new features, and made a few changes to existing features.

Use JavaScript to make API calls from your site pages

The most important new feature we snuck in this month is the ability to make API calls – using JavaScript – to your WildApricot database from a WildApricot site page. Previously, you could only make API calls from an external server, or from a desktop or mobile application.

Being able to make API calls within WildApricot site pages opens up all kinds of possibilities, allowing you to chose how you want to display your WildApricot database information.

For example, Rick Smith with the Mid-East Area Agency on Aging – who originally submitted the request for this feature on our developers forum – wanted to be able to display different sets of links to members based on their membership group or membership level.

Access to your WildApricot data from a site page is limited by the access permissions of the currently authenticated user – the signed-in member viewing the page. Consequently, you cannot access the API within public pages that do not require user authentication.

One word of caution: using API calls to retrieve data from your WildApricot database requires significant programming knowledge. If you want to take advantage of this functionality but lack the technical knowledge, you can engage the services of anapproved WildApricot partner.

Editing document links

Another feature added in this update is the ability to edit a document link after you’ve inserted it. Previously, you had to dive into the code to make any changes. Now, you can now edit a document link as you would a text link, and change the link destination, select a link style, or enter a tooltip.

Support system migration

A final change worth mentioning is the temporary suspension of your ability to submit support requests from within WildApricot. We’re doing this because we are moving to a new and improvement custom support system so we can serve you better. In the meantime, you can still email WildApricot support at support@wildapricot.com

  • Tonya Guzman:
Good to hear you hired more staff. I called last week for support twice and was on hold so long I hung up.
And yes I do know that email is an option.

    Terry Ibele:
    Hi Tonya,

Thanks for writing. Sorry to hear that you weren't able to get through to us. But yes, we have hired 2 new support staff (with more to come) who will increase our capacity. In the mean time, thanks for bearing with us, we appreciate it!
  • Katherine:
What about the maximum number of contacts in the WA database, we were told you are working in it by the end of 2015. But this is not our biggest issue - the most inconvenient thing is that there's no prebuilt functionality to create print ready name tags for event attendees, which results in half-day torture for our staff to create mail merge and make badges. And lastly - the list of event attendees is not exported into excel properly - more than half of titles and other data is lost in the process.
  • Terry Ibele

    Terry Ibele:
    Hi Katherine,

Thanks for writing. We are working on our Global plan, which will have 50,000 members if that's what you're referring to. Also, we are aware of the event tag function, we actually have it as an issue on our WishList which you can add your support to here: https://forums.wildapricot.com/forums/308932-wishlist/suggestions/8825578-preparing-event-participant-badges

A final thing is that it does seem odd that you're losing data when you export to excel. We definitely would like to look into this for you. Please contact our support team to create a ticket: support@wildapricot.com.

    I hope this helps.
