Hi,
Is there a way to import contacts without giving them any kind of memberships (yet)? I just want to build a database of potential members, but when I use the import feature, I'm forced to enter membership level for each entry.

Import (XML): In addition to current protocol that blank field means leave data as is, add a way to erase the field (except required system fields) - using a special character or character combination (make sure Excel/XML compatible)

The 3 fields that you need to set are 'Automatic event reminders',
'Member e-Mails and e-Newsletters' and 'Subscribed to emails'. Set
these fields to either 'yes' or 'no' appropriately.

Well in fact that did not work.
Even though I marked them as archived, the import tool prevented me from loading the full database because the total number of users was above the number our account is signed up for (500 users).
Its not a big deal though--we have several users in that number that don't have email addresses, so the ...

It sounds like you have an old Excel version. You need Excel 2003 or newer to open our export file.

For the moment, the only workaround is to enter 'dummy' emails for people who do not have emails. For example, you can set them to noemail1@email.com, noemail2@email.com or something along these lines.

Re 2) - moving info from the old field into a new field sounds like a very smart idea, should work fine.
