A Matter of Design - Matching Volunteers Using Job Design

by Volunteer Canada

Some charities and non-profits struggle to match volunteers to the volunteer positions available. At the same time, volunteers want to take ownership of tasks and experience the satisfaction of successful completion of volunteer work assignments. So it stands to reason that if volunteers know what is expected of them and see how their role fits into the larger picture, they will be likely to contribute more.

This guide offers some background on why job design can be good for organizations as well as volunteers and also provides:

  • A five-step process for applying job design to volunteering
  • Job design templates:
    • Functional Analysis
    • Component breakdown
    • Job Description
  • Sample job descriptions
