Is it possible to layout a page so that the text appears in columns? Could this be done directly through the HTML view or is there anything in the WYSIWYG editor that would allow this? Also - for the future it would be great if users could set up their own style classes that could be used throughout the site. I have played around with adding some inline styles, but that is obviously not the most efficient way to handle this.

Right now it has to be done through HTML view. We have a feature in our pipeline - Page templates - which will address that. (~6 weeks away)

Customizing styles - we are actually starting our work on this next week.
