    Blog enhancements

Please excuse me if this has already been requested.  I searched the forums but did not yet see it on the wishlist.

Here are a few things we'd like to see added to the blog:

    • Ability to limit number of blogs per page - with page navigation at top and bottom (1, 2, 3 or prev/next)
    • Members can use advanced HTML in their blogs.  We'd really like to have members be able to use the HTML toolbar like the admins have.
    • Notification to admins when a new comment is posted.
    • Link author name to member profile.

    Thanks!

    Jodi

    Hi Jodi,

Your input is appreciated - as always.

We will add this to our list. Re #3 - this one is the most complicated for security reasons. Whenever you allow HTML in member posting, this is potentially a big security hole so we have to be extra-carefully implementing it. But we are working on it.

    Thanks again.

    Re: Blog enhancements

I would also like to see the tagging or category function added to blog posts (like your support forum), where admins could potentially create their own checklist of tags to help with searchability of their blogs. along with a "sort by" function for admins (so you can sort posts by date or by category/tag).

    Re: Blog enhancements

I assume this is primarily to make it easier for people to find posts on a certain topic, correct?

What is preferable from your perspective - tags (multiple per post) or categories (one per post)?

    Re: Blog enhancements

    Exactly.

I think multiple tags per post helps with searchability, as blog posts could be likely to touch on more than one relevant "category" of information. If an admin had a "tags already used" pop-up/checkbox available during tagging, that would help reinforce standard tags.

    Re: Blog enhancements

Just to elaborate a little further...

I realize that your "forum" and your "blog" are two different types of functionality, but they have some similar limitations that might be addressed in tandem.

     For example:

You don't currently provide the built-in search capability for Blogs or Forums. I happen to be using a Forum page as a job posting area (I already saw you have a separate wish list thread for this item, but this is my workaround in the meantime).

I have successfully created a third-party search widget specific to searching that forum (for public/non-restricted pages). Unfortunately, I can't insert this directly at the top of my Forum page. If users want to "search the job bank" forum, I'm going to have to place it on a separate page and link back to the forum -- a little bit awkward from a navigation/search point of view.

The same is true for the Blog - if I wanted to create a little search widget to "search news" (what I'm using my blog for) I cannot insert it anywhere above the blog itself - which might be a meaningful place for it.

It would help immensely if, instead of just a "Description" field for either type of functional page, that you could allow for an editable area above or below the Forum/Blog name that also allowed for HTML editing or insertion of links/pictures (i.e. same tool palette you enable for your other webpages). You could limit the height of this - similar to how you have a "maximum height" for your header.

It would allow users to insert things like 3rd party search widgets, or direct links to other relevant pages, or even insert a graphic if they wanted to. Or even something like a mailto: link if their forums are moderated by an administrator.

Thanks for the time you take to read these suggestions. I really appreciate the feedback.

Thanks for the details.  I have added these ideas to our list of future enhancements.

    Re: Blog enhancements

This is exactly the same topic we mentioned in this thread http://www.wildapricot.com/forums/thread/6150.aspx

We need to be able to customize functional page ASAP.

It would be great if we could have this function in the next release.

    Is it possible?

    Thanks.

    Re: Blog enhancements

We have noted this but it will not be in the next release. Normally there is a lag of at least a few months before any change is released since it has to be prioritized, carefully analyzed, designed, developed and tested.

    Re: Blog enhancements

I concur. I shall persist in my requests for blog feature improvements, as it is a significant way for people to discover our website.

You are right to request HTML (or Javascript snippets) to be able to be inserted in the description sections of both blogs and forums.

    Re: Blog enhancements

Moving to another forum as this covers a number of different things. We try to focus threads in Roadmap and Wishlist forums on specific items so that we can address them one by one.
