    Registration - Groups

I have been reviewing the knowledge base regarding Groups and find that many of the posts relate to Membership Management.

I wish to raise the subject of Groups in the context of Registration where member registrants are allowed to create a new group or join an existing group when they are registering for an event.  This has little to do with member management groups but has a lot to do with registrant and event management satisfaction.

I have been involved in managing many not-for-profit fund raising events, many of which are golf tournaments where registrants wished they could participate with their friends, relatives or co-workers.  The ability to do this at registration would be a big positive for both the event organizers and participants. It would distinguish their events from those without this ability and if Wild Apricot incorporates this Registration Group ability into their registration process it would likewise distinguish their product from the competitors.

The above process could be applied to many user organizations to accommodate placing certain people together such as: seating arrangements, room sharing, transportation sharing, conference activity sharing, and so on, limited only by one's imagination.

I believe the process could be similar to the Member Group process in that a field could be added to the registration form by the Administrator allowing the creation and population of Registration Groups.  The first member to create and name the group would have editing powers to remove any name from the group.  Other registrants would register in the normal fashion but would have the ability to "look up" the list of groups, view existing members in the groups, and select the one they wish/have been invited to join.  The administrator would use the captured information for improving the planning of activities in the event.

I do not believe this is a huge change but it could make a significantly positive impact on the participants and help the organizers create more a successful event.

    Hi Bruce,

Appreciate the detailed description. This makes very good sense and I will add it to our list of potential enhancements.  It is not a small change (to make it obvious to use/smooth and make it jibe with existing features), but I think we should be able to address it in some time.

    Re: Registration - Groups

This comment is not totally on point, but I would agree that "group" is a term that was not used as I expected.  From reading higher level info and reading group, I expected to be able to do things in the database - but then when I read more detailed information about "group", I realized it is a very specific application and could probably use a better nomenclature - although I don't have a good sugestion.

As far as I can tell, anywhere group is mentioned so far, it means something along the lines of "multiple members/discount rates" - a set fee for x number of members - like a family or a company or a team - and each member can have their own personal access instead of using a group code.  And the only reason I can see for doing it this way is to grant the discount . . .  I haven't tried it yet, and am not sure if you can set up one "family membership" class and then anyone wanting a family membership can use that option - or if you have to set up a group for each family.

How I expected to be able to use "group" was to select out members from the database based on various database fields and perform actions on them.  By "class" (juried member, JAD member), by "state" or "chapter", etc.  Don't have a real database loaded yet, so have not been able to play with the options and see what it will do.  Assume I can select "groups" this way for emailing, reports, etc.

Can also see that when signing up for events, anything that needs partners or teams, it would be beneficial for people to be able to select their own.

    Re: Registration - Groups

You are right, our current 'Group membership' functionality is really for multi-person memberships.

The concept of  groups in other sense you described is on our drawing board.

BTW, you can use  advanced search to filter people by state or some custom field - and save a search. But this 'group' will only be useful for administrators - to export or send emails.
