default values for new member records

When there are limited options for a choice in the database, like radio button options, etc, I thought the top entry would be the "default" that was automatically entered.  Instead, the fields are just left blank until someone does something with them.

A default value would be great for items that the member can't see, that are set to record special statuses that members earn over the course of their membership.   For example, the first option for a field titled "juried member" might be "no" and would be the default that should be set when the record is created.  At some point, if the member becomes juried, then an admin can go in and change the field to "yes".

Hope this makes sense - if not, let me know.

You can actually do this now. Manually add 'default' choice and preselect it (in fields customization)

Re: default values for new member records

Ok, I have access to the database fields to customize them again.  I just put in a new field to test, called test.  Picked multiple choice, put in two options, put a green check mark next to the top one, which I am assuming is how I pre-select it.

Member access is set to view only.  It's available to all levels.  Others access is set to anyone.

When I go and create a new member via the member application, it just leaves the field blank.  It does not populate it with the choice I'm trying to select as the default.

    What am I missing?  thanks!

I played with it quite a bit last night.  I think I deleted out the "test" field, but there are a number with multiple choice and I'm trying to set up the first option as the default.  The first option, which does have a green check when I look at the field settings, should be what populates when the account is created.  They are not fields that the user is allowed to edit.  Then as that field becomes applicable for that person, admin will change the field to show that.  Right now, nothing is being entered into to the field when you create a new membership record.

I think the option that you need to use is Member access -> Edit: in own profile or in application.
If you select View only the field will not show up on the application form, it will only be visible on member profile as a read only field.

Re: default values for new member records

I'm actually looking at it via the control panel.  I can see all of the fields.

The fields are not auto-filling to a default choice.  I am having to manually select something for each field.

If I go to member application and create a new membership, shouldn't these field's with predefined choices auto-fill with the default choice?

Re: default values for new member records

If you can go into my account - http://wirejewelryartists.memberlodge.org

I just created the member Sue Espy, level=general member.  It is the only general member out there.  (Well now there is 2, I tried adding a test field with radio buttons to verify I had tried that.) I started on the member application and went through the entire process, including making a paypal payment.  I then went in and opened it via the control panel.

System Fields look correct.  Member Information that the member completes looks correct.

Member Sub-groups, that the member can not complete, is completely blank.  That is where I believe I should see the default values auto-filling, putting in "no" or "---" as applicable.  Then, somewhere down the road as the member qualifies, admin will change the appropriate field to "yes".

No matter what I do, I can not get a default value into the field, as Dmitry's comment leads me to believe I should be able to.  All of the fields are multiple choice.  All have 3 possible answers.  All have the top box checked with a green arrow.  I've tried marking them mandatory and not marking them mandatory.  They just don't take.  I've also tried making them radio buttons - same results.

    Regarding -

I think the option that you need to use is Member access -> Edit: in own profile or in application.
If you select View only the field will not show up on the application form, it will only be visible on member profile as a read only field.

The entire point of picking view only is that we do not want the members to be able to edit these fields!  Only to view them in profile.

Re: default values for new member records

You are right. The default value is not used for fields not accessible in the profile.

We have added this to our to-do list to address, but I can not offer a workaround or a timeline for a fix for now.
