    Email notification about forum posts

    Current behavior:
The only way users can find out about new forum posts/replies is by going online and checking the forum page.

    Desired behavior:
Ability for users to subscribe and receive email notifications/summaries of new forum posts and replies.

Option to receive forum messages by email

It would be great to have an option for members to receive posts from the forums via email.  If that option were available, we'd switch from MSN Groups to the forum on our website.

     Thanks,

     Bernadette

Yes, this is one of the things we plan to add.

Is this still on the drawing board?  It is something that our group would very much like to have, but I want to use the forum built into the site.

    Thanks.

It very much is in our plan and is coming closer to the front of the queue.

I expect us to release this within a few months from today.

Re: Option to receive forum messages by email

We have a public forum.  The forum on the website would be used for private member-only discussions.  It would not be heavily frequented, so email notification that there was a new post would be nice - at least for the directors - to make sure they know something has been posted that might need to be dealt with.  We would want it to be a subscription at the forum level, not the thread level.

This has entered development so should be released around end of June.

The upcoming release of this feature is big news in our communities! Can't wait to not have to log in to know about forum posts. Thanks WA!

Re: Email notification about forum posts

Our group is looking forward to this update!  Members not receiving emails and instead having to go to forums is the main reason we are not using the discussion group and instead kept our yahoo group for member communication.

Re: Email notification about forum posts

This would be an excellent addition.  Can it be provided as an option for members to choose for blog postings as well?

Re: Email notification about forum posts

We will initially release it for forums - and the consider for blogs later on.

Blogs have RSS and it is possible now to use a third--party service like Feedburner to setup email subscriptions to a blog.

Re: Email notification about forum posts

At the moment we plan to include into initial release only two update period options:
    - Daily
    - Weekly

Would it be sufficient ? Or quicker notifications are important?

If yes, what period? an hour? 15 minutes?

Re: Email notification about forum posts

Instant notification would be most desirable. That's typically what we require.

The ability to create sub-forums with descriptions as does vbulletin is important too.
