Do you get some of your best blog ideas when you’re away from your computer? Try audio blogging: Speak your piece, grab a quick interview, or capture the vibes of a live event with your mobile phone — then quickly post the audio online to share with your organization's members and supporters.

AudioBoo.fm is just one of a number of nifty little free iPhone app available. It's made for iPhone users, of course, but it will work from other phones as well (including land lines) for the price of a UK phone call. Share your audio by copy-pasting a snippet of HTML code on your blog or website, post automatically to your social networks, or click to share a link on Twitter or Facebook from the AudioBoo website.

For example, here is Ted Nguyen’s AudioBoo chat with Ross Teasley of O C Good, “a group of energetic, committed, service-minded Internet professionals in Orange County California who volunteer services to struggling non-profits in our communities” that is set to launch in January 2010.

Listen!

Each audio post has its own page on the AudioBoo site, where you can search by tag/keyword for other “boos” of interest, check out the profiles of the site members who create the content, and comment, tweet or share on Facebook. Geo-location data from the iPhone is used to create a map showing precisely where the audio was recorded.

Visit AudioBoo.fm to sign up for a free account (don’t forget to check out the terms and conditions, as you would for any service).  And for other mobile audio blogging options, would-be phonecasters might want to check out Tumblr’s iPhone app and call-in audio feature (via a toll-free number), and ipadio for both iPhone and Android…

What other audio-blogging apps has your nonprofit tried?
What tools can you recommend to other organizations who’d like to quickly capture and share the sound of their grassroots growing?

Rebecca,

I use the Dragon Dictation app for the iPhone. Basically, it's a voice-to-text converter. Then I can copy the text into a post, edit, format and away I go!

Funny you should happen to mention that, John!
Here's what I was just about to post...

Dragon Dictation downloadIf you feel that voice-to-text software might help you make the most of your blogging time, but your nonprofit doesn't have the budget to invest in software that you might or might not end up using, here's an opportunity to try it out.

For a limited time, Nuance — the maker of Dragon Naturally Speaking voice recognition software — is offering free downloads of its Dragon Dictation app for the iPhone.

Dragon Dictation is an easy-to-use voice recognition application powered by Dragon NaturallySpeaking that allows you to easily speak and instantly see your text or email messages. In fact, it’s up to five (5) times faster than typing on the keyboard.

With Dragon Dictation, you can text or email your friends, update Facebook status, send notes and reminders to yourself, or tweet to the world... all using your voice.
You can download Dragon Dictation here: http://www.dragonmobileapps.com/apple/dictation.html. There's no word on how long this app will be available without charge, but the offer is still open as of today, 22 December 2009.

Thanks for introducing this topic, Rebecca. I have reviewed a plethora of audio podcasting online software for my particular needs. Not surprisingly, audioBoo and iPadio are the two finalists.

Right now, I prefer iPadio, mainly because it offers more features and is more developed than audioBoo. Yet audioBoo is catching up and has a more social network community around it (if that's important).

I still have a need for private/password-protected audio podcasting, and I haven't found any service that offers this (yet).

My reviews: http://www.mrulster.org/2009/09/seeking-integrated-audio-podcasting.html

Best regards,

Allan

Thanks for the iPadio tip, Allan, and especially for sharing the link to your reviews: that's a great round-up of tools you've put together, and it's particularly useful that you let readers know what you're looking for and why each tool may or may not measure up... Do let us know if you track down and give your stamp of approval to a private podcasting service, will you? I can imagine that's something a number of people and organizations might be able to put to good use.
