November is National Homeless Youth Awareness Month

As many of you know, November is National Homeless Youth Awareness Month. On November 13, Standup for Kids in LA held a candle light vigil for the 10,000 children who are homeless in the LA area - 79% of them unsheltered, 13 die each day due to physical assault, illness, or suicide.

But this was no ordinary candle light vigil. It was the modern day equivalent - using cell phones to illuminate the shadows that homeless youth live in. Concerned citizens can also use their cell phones to add their name to the Declaration to End Youth Homelessness (text SIGN to 73976). Or, through a widget, they can add their name and track progress toward 1 million signatures without even leaving their current site.

If you'd like to support National Youth Awareness Month, you can do it by posting this simple widget (see bottom of the post) for the remaining month of November on your site or blog. (To get it, email me at soha(at)wildapricot(dot)com and I will send you the widget code).

If you want to go above and beyond posting a simple widget on your site..here are some other things you could to spread the word:

  • Write a post about National Homeless Youth Awareness Month with a link to the Homeless Youth Among Us site.
  • Link to a site that provides information about National Homeless Youth Awareness
  • Encourage other bloggers to take part

Virgin Mobile and The RE*Generation will link to anyone who blogs, links, or posts the widget... giving a shout out to those sites recognizing them for building awareness.  This is a great example of using technology tools and mobile phones to reach an audience as well as a good opportunity to get involved.
